An SME based in Casablanca, Morocco, contacted us through SOS RANSOMWARE after a ransomware attack made one of its QNAP backups impossible to restore.
The affected backup was a 750 GB .qdff file containing a priority file:

Unlike some backup formats affected by ransomware, this QNAP file had not been renamed following the attack.

Secure Transfer of the QNAP Backup

An initial extraction of the recoverable elements produced preliminary results. A technical discussion with the client then helped identify additional data sources that could improve the recovery rate.
Following this analysis, the client provided us with a production virtual machine, which was also corrupted, to complete the investigation and cross-analyze the different available data sources.
After cross-analyzing the QNAP backup and the additional data provided, combined with the use of specialized tools developed by SOS RANSOMWARE, our R&D engineers confirmed the following results:
