Acronis files (TIB / TIBX) damaged or encrypted by ransomware, what can I do?

What is a TIB file?

TIB files are disk images created by Acronis True Image, a well-known backup software competitor to Veeam, for example. These files play a key role in computer data backup, as they contain an exact copy of the state of a system at a given time.

Acronis protects the entire IT infrastructure, from physical servers and workstations to virtual machines (VMs). In the event of failure, Acronis images can be used to restore all data to a previous state, ensuring fast and efficient recovery.

With the rise of ransomware threats, real disasters for economic activity (see: ransomware increases inflation), the Acronis software suite and its cloud backup solutions, stands out as a fundamental resource in business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) strategy, for IT managers.

The threat of ransomware to TIB files

Ransomware, a type of malware designed to ransom a target organization for the decryption of its computer data, poses a serious threat to the security of TIB files in particular.

According to a recent study, in at least 93% of cyberattacks, the criminal attempted to attack the information system’s backups, thus drastically reducing the victim’s options for escaping the trap… and, again according to the same study, in 75% of ransomware attacks, companies lost all or part of their backups.

By encrypting TIB and TIBX files, ransomware renders data inaccessible, blocking users’ access to their own information. Encryption is often performed using complex algorithms such as AES or RSA, making the task of decryption extremely difficult without the appropriate key.

In a large number of cases, ransomware tends to delete Volume Shadow Copy versions, which are automatic backups performed by Windows, further complicating data recovery.

To be able to restore without paying, your backups need to be recoverable…

Even if cyber-insurance is still beneficial in many cases (provided you can afford it), relying essentially on your own resources is still the best guarantee of recovery after such a catastrophe.

In many cases, paying a ransom is not enough: in one case out of two, companies are unable to restore their data.

Faced with the various problems encountered with Acronis backups, we are at your disposal to help you recover your data in the event of loss or damage to your backup files.

Thanks to our experience and know-how with this type of file format, our engineers have developed tailor-made solutions to recover your data from corrupted Acronis backups.
